Oblivious

What's the expression..."ignorance is bliss"?  I love that expression, and it's so true.  Sometimes you learn things, only to wish you never really had.  It's one of the challenges of being an adult.  I envy children for their ability to be care-free spirits, chasing their hearts and dreams and really living in the moment.  I aspire to be more like that - oblivious to consequences and concerns.  Of course I don't mean this in a "let's be reckless" sort of way - just in the straightforward manner of a child, living their life and not thinking beyond the moment.  It's the carpe diem mentality, and I love it.  I just wish I could do more of it.

Ok, back to reality.  I was on the massive Thomas Hawk photowalk in Austin last year.  It was a great experience - meeting Thomas, whom I respect immensely - as well as going on a photowalk with literally 100 or more folks.  It's a great experience.  Humbling, interesting, crazy - but a great experience.

That leads me to this shot.  I was oblivious to the shots all the other photogs were taking.  They may have been oblivious to what I was shooting.  This runner was definitely oblivious to me and all the other photogs that were on this bridge, shooting this and that.  He was in the zone, in his moment, doing his workout and focused on his goals.  He was oblivious - and that's a good thing.

Ferry Building impressions

I love the Ferry Building and tend to shoot it from this same spot on nearly every trip I make to San Francisco.  It's just a beautiful scene in my opinion.  Consequently, I have a lot of shots that look pretty similar though.  But that's ok, because even though I shoot the same scene twice, in reality it never looks the same due to weather and lighting changes.

In this case, it was pretty dark already and this scene tends to sparkle a little more when there is more available light, at least in my opinion.  This is an HDR image and when I finished creating the HDR, the overall scene was somewhat "blah".  I briefly messed around with it and tried a few other things, but decided it was not going to make an impact.  But then I had an idea: how about changing it up and treating this more like an Impressionistic version or a watercolor-type of painting?

So I popped over to Topaz Adjust and went to work. And you know what?  Topaz Adjust saved the image for me!  Thanks Topaz!

I have to admit - I'm a door guy.  I love doors, entries, entryways, entrances, gates, portals, passages, openings...I just find them all interesting.  And...the grungier, the better.  In other words, it's hard for me to walk around most places because I am always checking out all the doors.  I guess there could be worse problems, eh?  I saw this one in downtown Austin, and the grunge, paint, metalwork and overall character just caused me to pause.  I'm glad I did! (and if you look close, that is my reflection looking back!)

Topaz Adjust v5 Giveaway!

Wandering at the Ritz

Thanks everyone for all the visits and comments this week, I really appreciate it!  I am a bit behind on returning the favors, and am preparing for a big trip wherein I hope to return with lots of photos.  More soon!

This is the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Naples, FL.  Actually, there are two of them there.  Isn't that odd?  Two Ritz-Carlton Hotels in one not-so-big town, separated by just about 3 miles.  It's true.  There is one on the beach, and the other one (featured in this photo) is on a golf course.  I know because I went to the wrong one first, before making my way to this one.  Anyways, one morning while there I popped out for a stroll around the grounds, while carrying my Nikon of course!  Always make time for that!

Strolling in LoDo

LoDo is an abbreviation for Lower Downtown and is a historic district in Denver, CO.  It is a great place to wander with a camera, and for me the main attraction is their wonderful Union Station with that awesome Beaux-Arts facade (yep, I had to look that one up!).  I love both architecture and train stations anyways, and this one is so cool looking that you just have to photograph it.  Sadly, the inside just doesn't measure up to the outside, but hey who's complaining?  The exterior is without peer.  Here's a closeup shot of the exterior that I have previously shared here on the blog...thought it might be worth trotting out again for another viewing.

If you are ever in the area be sure and stop by - lots of great things to photograph in this part of Denver!

Topaz Adjust v5 free giveaway!!

And the winners are...Lina G and Dan Kasberger!!  Congrats, you will see an email from me to Topaz and they will get you your prize!  Thanks everyone for participating!!

Ritz-Carlton, Naples

Yes, staying at a Ritz-Carlton Hotel really is pretty awesome.  I had the good fortune of attending a customer event which happened to be hosted at one of the Ritz-Carlton Hotels in Naples, FL.  Yes, I said one of them.  There are actually two in Naples - isn't that wild?  Anyways, it was hosted at the one on the beach, and I was housed at this one which is a couple of miles away on a beautiful golf course.  No, I never hit the links but I did squeeze in a little photo time around the property.  And I didn't mind being at this one, since it was newer and in my opinion actually a bit nicer.  Anyways, I had a few spare minutes one afternoon, and got out with the camera.  This is a view from behind the property, standing on the edge of the golf course, and looking back at the hotel across the lake, which I am sure is home to many an errant Titleist.  And by the way, be sure and ask the price for the breakfast buffet before you order - it's $25!!

Win a free copy of Topaz Adjust!!

UPDATE: Contest is closed and we have 2 winners: Jake McKee and Scott Wood!  Congrats guys!  I will send your info over to the Topaz folks and you will be all set.  Thanks everyone for participating!!
